AM: Sailboat Trophy 2 Fifteen helms set off in the light north-westerly winds which had, minutes before, replaced the very light south-easterlies which had risked becalming the fleet. Roger Heasman (Streaker) had a sensational start, half a boat length in front of Jane Anderson's Laser Radial but they were right up against the mark and those with clearer air may have benefitted. Certainly Bob Sampson, with a full size sail on his Laser - as had most of the Laser fleet - who had started a touch further back, was leading the bunch by the time they were on their way back down the Lake from Pinkie. He was closely chased by Sue Murray (Laser) and the Jane Anderson Radial. Penny Abbott (Laser) who'd just swapped French ski slopes for a very flat Upper Tamar Lake, followed on. The Streakers of Roger Heasman and Robin Spiller and the RS200 of Team Pollard (with Brian getting the gennaker flying on the run back to Dam Green) kept ahead of the other boats. In the light winds there was little drama although the wind was blanketed by the land at Inlet and boats often had a few moments of anxious drifting. With laps taking twenty minutes for the slower boats the race was shortened to three laps. The first six boats to cross the finish line were Lasers (Sampson, Murray, Anderson, Pollard N, Abbott, Chadney) until the RS200 arrived, but the handicap brought John Dabbs (Gull) up to second, Roger Heasman (Streaker) to fifth and John Duncalf (Topper) to sixth. The poor RS200 got shoved down to thirteenth. Results: 1. Bob Sampson (Laser) 2. John Dabbs (Gull) 3. Sue Murray (Laser) 4. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 5. Roger Heasman (Streaker) 6. John Duncalf (Topper) 7. Robin Spiller (Streaker) 8. Nathan Pollard (Laser) 9. Toby Tobias (Bosun) 10. Jane Chadney (Laser) 11. Penny Abbott (Laser) 12. Linda Spiller (Laser) 13. James and Brian Pollard (RS200) 14. John Weller (Laser) 15. John Savage (Otter) PM: Ladies, Gentlemans', Juniors' and Gosling Cups. The wind had freshened a little for the afternoon race and Vicki Duncalf, the Officer of the Day, lengthened the lap by taking the fleet up to Far buoy rather than Pinkie but reduced the number of laps to be sailed to three. John Buckett in his Otter made an excellent start closely followed by Bob Sampson who soon overtook and indeed led at the end of the first lap. Jane Anderson, despite a smaller sail, overtook him on the second lap. Sue Murray followed them with Penny Abbott behind her throughout. Jane Chadney, on the other hand, had only managed eighth on the first lap but picked up two places on the second. However she never caught the well-sailed Solo of Paul Whybrow whose fifth over the finish line gave him second place when the handicaps were applied. Roger Heasman and Robin Spiller, in their familiar Streakers, were separated by five seconds at the end but had done a good deal of place-swapping in the course of the race. The handicap again worked its magic and brought up John Buckett from thirteenth on the water to fourth and John Dabbs from fourteenth to sixth. Results: 1. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 2. Paul Whybrow (Solo) 3. Bob Sampson (Laser) 4. John Buckett (Otter) 5. Sue Murray (Laser) 6. John Dabbs (Gull) 7. Penny Abbott (Laser) 8. Toby Tobias (Bosun) 9. Adam Hilton (Solo) 10.
