Teatime Tankard 4 The lap chart reads as though nothing happened; Linda Spiller, with a big sail on her Laser, led all three laps, Adam Hilton followed, Roger Heasman with his novices - Sally Wills and Pavol Rovensky - were next in the Bosun and John Dabbs was last. But the lap chart is misleading. Linda was well behind after a bad start but made up ground very fast in the light NNW winds. Adam Hilton had a good start, behind first away John Dabbs, but threw it away by getting confused about whether to leave Middle to port or starboard. This left Robin Spiller to sail smoothly into a lead which he kept until the fleet was close to the Dam when he appeared to his wife and Adam Hilton to be about to go round Dam Red not Dam Green. They shouted at him, incomprehensibly as it turned out, and put him off; he retired. Linda's lead was cemented when Adam had a very near capsize after Dam Green which gave him a Solo full of water for the next half lap until the self-bailers did their job. After all these happenings it is true that the race from then on was comparatively uneventful. The handicap cruelly took away Linda's win. Results: 1. Adam Hilton (Solo) 2. John Dabbs (Gull) 3. Linda Spiller (Laser) 4. Roger Heasman, Sally Wills and Pavol Rovensky (Bosun) Rob Spiller (Streaker) rtd Thanks to Jane Chadney for running the race.
