AM: Cup Race 5 Great rolling rocks of westerly wind knocked boats over or else vacuums sucked helms out of boats. A couple of boats never even got to the start and Robin Spiller (Streaker) spent so much time succouring a capsizing Raily Graham (Topper) that it wasn't worth continuing the race. The choice of boats and rigs was cautious. All the Lasers had little 4.7 sails except the speed merchant James Pollard who roared around the course at the front of the fleet with a full-sized sail. Jane Anderson and Penny Abbott were in Toppers. Bob Sampson and the Commodore's sister Alison were in Bob's RS200; they were not tempted to raise the gennaker but followed James in a consistent second place. Sue Murray (Laser 4.7) had to get past Jane Anderson and Linda Spiller (Laser 4.7) before she could establish herself in third. Adam Hilton (Solo) was sixth from the first to last lap but had hit and missed so many buoys that retirement was the only option. The Bosun (Toby Tobias, John Duncalf and Marlo Graham) was often invisible in spray while going round in seventh. The handicaps changed the order less than usual but did manage to move Jane Anderson and her Topper from fourth to first. Results: 1. Jane Anderson (Topper) 2. James Pollard (Laser) 3. Sue Murray (Laser 4.7) 4. Linda Spiller (Laser 4.7) 5. Bob Sampson and Alison Linnell (RS200) 6. Penny Abbott (Topper) 7. Toby Tobias, John Duncalf and Marlo Graham (Bosun) Brian Pollard & Cilla Gilbert (Tasar), Geoff Floyd (Solo), Robin Spiller (Streaker Wave), Vicki Duncalf (Topper), Raily Graham (Topper), Adam Hilton (Solo) rtd PM: Pursuit Race 6 Nine boats attempted the afternoon pursuit race and six finished it. In other words the winds had not abated; if anything increased. James Pollard reduced his sail to a 4.7 but got himself from sixth to first. Jane Anderson managed to pass Vicki Duncalf who started a couple of minutes ahead and came second. Toby Tobias and John Duncalf got the flying Bosun from fourth to third, but Bob Sampson started 9th, was 8th at the end of lap 1, 6th on lap 2, 5th on lap 3 and 4th at the end. Adam Hilton started 7th and finished 6th, only promoted by Linda Spiller starting too early and getting disqualified. Roger Heasman returned to the shore feeling that three capsizes were enough. Results: 1. James Pollard (Laser 4.7) 2. Jane Anderson (Topper) 3. Toby Tobias and John Duncalf (Bosun) 4. Bob Sampson and Alison Linnell(RS200) 5. Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 6.
