With the club team away racing at Roadford, the remnants decided to have a Chocoholics regatta. AM race Five boats crossed the start line and on the water nobody could touch Steve Axford in his fully rigged Laser. However there was a close battle between the three Toppers of Jane Anderson and John and Vicki Duncalf with Jane coming out on top. Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Topper) 2nd John Duncalf (Topper) 3rd Steve Axford (Laser) 4th Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 5th Roger Heasman (Laser Radial) Lunchtime: Peter Pocock Junior Series. This was the last race of the series. Adam Pollard got away first and lead all the way. Sarah Balsdon and Grace Waterhouse followed with Tamsyn Keens in third on a reduced rig. Sarah Heard had a nightmare trying to get round the first buoy as the dam kept causing wind shifts on her just as she approached the buoy. On the last leg, Sarah and Grace very nearly caught Adam with Tamsyn closing on them as well. With the series complete Adam is the worthy winner of the Peter Pocock Cup. Well done to all our young sailors that took part. Results: 1st Adam Pollard 2nd Sarah Balsdon and Grace Waterhouse 3rd Tamsyn Keens Sarah Heard rtd PM race: With Steve Axford now crewing for Paul and the additional boat of John Savage, six boats started. The Scorpion with Paul and Steve on board scorched of the line and disappeared over the horizon leaving the three Toppers to squabble with each other for the whole race. Jane Anderson looked as if she had got clear but would have made a mistake nearly missing West Buoy but for John Duncalf’s kindly prompting. This mistake allowed John to overtake her and beat her to the line. Results: 1st Paul Whybrow and Steve Axford (Scorpion) 2nd John Duncalf (Topper) 3rd Jane Anderson (Topper) 4th Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 5th Roger Heasman (Laser Radial) John Savage (Cadet) rtd Team Racing at Roadford Reservoir Tamar’s travelling team made the trip to Roadford Lake for the first of a two-leg keenly contested match against Roadford sailing club. As a much larger reservoir than Upper Tamar, many of the Roadford club members sail much bigger dinghies (complete with asymmetric gennakers) than those most commonly used at Upper Tamar, so the competition had something of a David and Goliath feel to it. Nevertheless, Tamar had put together a team with some potential for boat speed that included four Laser sailors: Nicky Buckett, Simon Veal, Katie Leveridge and not forgetting Mike Ford, who left his Bosun behind, but showed that he hadn’t forgotten his old Laser-sailing skills. Turning out once more for Tamar by special request, Toby Tobias soon had his immaculate red-hulled Bosun ploughing through the Roadford waves, aided by crew John Leveridge. On the day, though, the most successful Upper Tamar boat was the RS200 helmed by Bob Samson, with on this occasion Jane Chadney as crew. On the broad expanses of Roadford, the asymmetric RS200 was able to spread its wings and demonstrate its true potential, posting a remarkable 2nd place in the morning race (out of a combined fleet of around 20 boats). Despite the wind rising further to quite a stiff breeze over lunch, Bob and Jane were going even better in the afternoon race, until they were caught unawares as they hoisted the gennaker on the second lap for the downwind section and capsized; the RS200 promptly inverted and the long delay before righting cost them any chance of another good result. David Harker was also battling with a gennaker in his RS Feva, but with the added complication that he was sailing single-handed; at the end of the downwind leg, the gennaker refused to come down and sadly he capsized at the mark. When the combined results from the two races were calculated at the end of the day, Roadford has assembled a substantial points lead and the Tamar sailors will clearly need to dig deep to pull back into contention in the second leg of the competition next week.
