Sailing at the Lake
Racing
Times: the main club racing day is Sunday, when there are normally two races at midday and 2:30pm. From mid-May until late September, there is also racing on a Wednesday afternoon. See the Sailing Programme page for more details.
Classes: the racing is on a Handicap basis, using the usual Portsmouth Yardstick. The commonest classes at the club are:
Laser - probably the most popular class in the club, with numbers in double figures.
Topper - a smaller single-hander, with many sailed at UTLSC, particularly popular with younger sailors, but very successfully sailed by club members of all ages
Bosun - a very stable and reassuring dinghy, heavier than most. Designed as a double-hander but sometimes sailed single-handed at the club.
Other classes sailed include Solo, Enterprise, Graduate, Otter etc, but any dinghy with a PY (or even without) is very welcome.

A video of club racing, shot and edited by John Dabbs, which is available on YouTube, gives an excellent idea of what it is like to sail at Upper Tamar:

A second YouTube video, also shot and edited by John Dabbs, shows how different sailing can be on a breezy day:

Cruising
Many club members enjoy going for a gentle cruise on the Upper Tamar Lake, independently of racing. Note that during most of the year, the South West Lakes Trust provide safety boat cover for all watersports users on the Lake.
Club members also have a cruising programme away at locations such as Carrick Roads and Plymouth Sound; see the Social Programme page for more details.
